Gearbox Repair Cost Singapore

The gearbox has started jerking. Now there's the bill to think about. Most full overhauls at Gearbox King sit between $2,050 and $2,950 and carry a 2-year, 40,000km warranty. A reconditioned DQ200 mechatronics replacement is $1,250 to $1,550 fitted. The fault decides which job you need.

101+ drivers have rated us 5★ on Google

Full overhaul: $2,050 to $2,950

Our usual band covers most Japanese, Korean and continental automatics. Allow more for a hybrid or dual-clutch gearbox.

Full overhaul: 2-year, 40,000km warranty

Your full overhaul is covered for two years or 40,000km, whichever comes first. The term is set out on your written quote.

The fault sets the bill

A rough shift alone tells you little about the cost. We find the cause, then quote for the work it needs. An isolated component fault can mean a much smaller bill than a full overhaul.

We'll collect the car

If the gearbox has left the car stranded, send us its location. We'll arrange collection. Towing for gearbox repairs is free across Singapore.

Most of this guide deals with full overhauls because they account for the larger bills. An isolated fault in a component usually costs much less to put right. We check the gearbox before recommending the work. A rough shift has enough possible causes without adding guesswork to the bill.

Our overhaul prices by make

A full overhaul starts with the gearbox out of the car and stripped on the bench. We replace the consumables inside, including the clutches, seals and gaskets. Fresh transmission oil and a new filter are part of the job. Worn hard parts are replaced with quality components before the gearbox is rebuilt. The full overhaul carries our 2-year, 40,000km warranty. Our gearbox overhaul guide explains the work.

Gearbox type has a large bearing on the price. In our quotes, CVTs generally sit above conventional automatics. Hybrid and dual-clutch units tend to cost more again. The model year matters too, with newer versions usually dearer to rebuild.

The make rows use the middle half of our quotes, with $150 added either side. Where we have fewer than eight quotes for a make, we use their full spread and widen it the same way. Check the notes for models that fall outside the main band.

DSG mechatronics and clutch pack costs

A mechatronics fault can make a dual-clutch gearbox shift badly or refuse to engage. This unit controls the shifts through its electronics and hydraulics. Once we confirm the fault, we replace the unit with the correct reconditioned or brand-new option. Coding and adaptation match it to the car. Our mechatronics service guide explains the replacement process.

DQ200 unit prices include installation. Installation and basic programming are included in the DQ250 and DQ500 price. A car that stalls or will not start may need additional programming. We quote for that work before it begins.

Which DSG is in your car? Treat these as the usual fitments. The same model can have a different gearbox depending on the engine, the year and the market. We confirm the unit code on the car before quoting.

  • DQ200, 7-speed dry clutch. The small engines, up to about 250Nm: 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI, 1.6 TDI. Volkswagen Golf Mk6 and Mk7, Polo, Jetta, Touran, T-Roc, Scirocco and the lower-powered Passat. Check the gearbox before comparing prices

A dual-clutch gearbox has its own costly faults, including the mechatronics unit and clutch pack. Work on these gearboxes often costs more than on a conventional automatic. Comparing quotes gets messy when they refer to different units. The lists show the usual fitments. A model can change gearbox with the engine, the year and the market. We confirm the unit on the car before quoting.

Dual-clutch:

  • Volkswagen Golf GTI and R, Polo GTI, Passat, Tiguan, Touran, T-Roc, T-Cross, Arteon, Scirocco and Jetta with DSG
  • Audi models badged S tronic: A1, A3, S3, RS3, Q2, Q3, TT, TTS, TT RS, R8, and the A4, A5, A6 and A7 versions with S tronic. Their tiptronic versions, including the B9 S4 and S5, are torque-converter automatics
  • Skoda Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq, Karoq, Scala and Kamiq with DSG
  • Porsche 911, Cayman, Boxster, Panamera and Macan with PDK. The Cayenne uses Tiptronic S, a torque-converter automatic
  • Mercedes-Benz A, B, CLA, GLA and GLB with 7G-DCT or 8G-DCT, including the AMG 35 and 45 versions, and the first-generation AMG GT coupe (2015 to 2021) with its 7-speed DCT. AMG's MCT in the C63, E63, GT 4-door and the current GT coupe is a wet-clutch automatic, not a dual-clutch
  • BMW 1 Series (F40), 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44), the F48 X1 and F39 X2, and Mini from 2018, on the smaller petrol and diesel engines, with the 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch. In those generations the M135i, 128ti and M235i, the 2.0-litre diesels and the Mini JCW models use an 8-speed torque-converter automatic instead. The newer 1 Series (F70), 2 Series Gran Coupe (F74), X1 (U11), X2 (U10) and the 2024-on Mini range, JCW included, use a 7-speed dual-clutch on every petrol and diesel version. The electric iX1, iX2 and the electric Minis use a single-speed drive instead
  • The older BMW M cars with M DCT: E90, E92 and E93 M3, F80 M3, F82 and F83 M4, F87 M2, F10 M5, F12 and F13 M6 and the E89 Z4 35is
  • Hyundai i30 turbo, Kia Seltos, Stonic, Niro and Sportage turbo with a DCT
  • Renault Megane, Captur, Scenic and Clio RS with EDC
  • Honda hybrids with i-DCD: Vezel, Fit and Jazz, Shuttle, Freed and Jade hybrids
  • MG HS 1.5 turbo with the 7-speed DCT
  • Nissan GT-R R35, the second-generation Honda NSX (2016 on) with its 9-speed DCT, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X with TC-SST, Alfa Romeo Tonale hybrid with TCT, Ferrari models with the F1 dual-clutch gearbox, McLaren from the MP4-12C on, Lamborghini Huracan with its 7-speed LDF dual-clutch, the third-generation Bentley Continental GT from 2018, and the older Ford and Volvo Powershift cars

Not dual-clutch, whatever the forum said:

  • BMW with the 8-speed Steptronic, and every ZF 8HP in any brand: torque converter automatic. Plug-in hybrid versions such as the 330e and 530e use the same automatic with an electric motor and a clutch in place of the torque converter; still not a dual-clutch
  • The current BMW M cars, G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2 and G90 M5: ZF 8HP automatic
  • Mercedes-Benz C, E, S, GLC, GLE and G-Class with 9G-Tronic: torque converter
  • Toyota and most Lexus: torque converter automatic or CVT
  • Honda petrol models: CVT on the current generations; many pre-2016 models (Civic, Stream, Accord, Odyssey) have a conventional 5-speed automatic, so check the model year
  • Subaru: Lineartronic CVT on current models, a conventional automatic before about 2010, and the STI manual
  • Modern Volvo with the Aisin 8-speed automatic: torque converter. The exceptions are the XC40 plug-in hybrid and the later front-wheel-drive XC40 B3 and B4 mild hybrids, which use a 7-speed dual-clutch

Why the same model can cost more

  • Gearbox design. Conventional automatics generally sit at the lower end of our overhaul quotes. CVTs tend to cost more, while dual-clutch gearboxes and hybrid transaxles usually sit higher.
  • Model year. Extra gears and electronics add to the parts bill on newer gearboxes. A 2021 version will generally cost more to overhaul than a 2011 version of the same car.
  • Extent of the fault. A sound gearbox with a failed component may only need targeted work. The quote then covers that component and the labour involved. Diagnosis establishes the scope.
  • Driving with the fault. Carrying on after the gearbox starts playing up can damage hard parts as well as consumables. Having it checked early can keep the repair smaller.
  • Parts supply. Scarce units and exotic cars tend to carry a higher parts bill.

Getting the car here needn't add to the bill. Towing for gearbox repairs is free anywhere in Singapore. Instalment plans are available through Atome, Grab Paylater and Shopee Paylater.

Choose the work to suit the wear

A targeted repair makes sense when the fault is isolated and the rest of the gearbox is sound. In that case it is usually the cheapest option. We confirm the cover for the job on your written quote. Our gearbox repair guide explains this approach.

A full overhaul deals with wear throughout the gearbox. We strip it and replace the parts that wear, then rebuild it. This is often the right choice when the damage extends beyond an isolated component. Every full overhaul carries a 2-year, 40,000km warranty. Read about the full overhaul process to see what is involved.

A used gearbox brings its previous life with it. You may know little about how it was driven or how much wear is inside. A lower purchase price can lose its appeal if the replacement needs work as well. We favour rebuilding your own gearbox when its condition makes that the right job.

Servicing helps keep the gearbox in good order. Fresh oil is routine maintenance; an existing mechanical fault still needs diagnosis. Our gearbox servicing guide covers the maintenance work.

Questions about the repair bill

How much does a gearbox repair cost in Singapore?

The fault sets the cost. At Gearbox King, a full overhaul on most Japanese, Korean and continental automatics sits at $2,050 to $2,950. It carries a 2-year, 40,000km warranty. Hybrid and dual-clutch overhauls generally cost more. An isolated component repair usually costs well below a full overhaul. We confirm what has failed and give you a written quote after diagnosis.

How much does a gearbox overhaul cost?

Our usual bands are $2,050 to $2,750 for Japanese and Korean makes and $2,450 to $2,950 for continental makes. Hybrid transaxles sit at $2,850 to $3,650. Dual-clutch and PDK units sit at $3,350 to $5,650. Each band allows about $150 either side of what Gearbox King usually quotes for that group. A full overhaul carries a 2-year, 40,000km warranty.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a gearbox?

A repair is usually the lower-cost choice when the fault is isolated and the rest of the gearbox is healthy. Widespread wear calls for an overhaul. A used replacement can have a lower purchase price, though its wear may leave you paying for more work later. A brand-new gearbox from the dealer is generally the most expensive route. We assess yours and explain which option fits the damage.

Can a damaged gearbox be repaired?

Most gearbox faults can be put right. Worn internal parts can be replaced during a rebuild. A failed mechatronics unit is replaced as a unit. Damage to the casing or hard parts after oil loss can make the job less viable. We inspect the gearbox to establish what can be rebuilt and what that work will cost.

How much does it cost to fix a car gearbox if it is only one part?

Usually less than an overhaul. For example, a fitted reconditioned DQ200 mechatronics unit falls at $1,250 to $1,550 with the 6-month, 10,000km option. The 18-month, 30,000km option is $1,650 to $1,950. We price valve body and torque converter work after diagnosis. The unit fitted and the damage found determine the quote.

How much does a DSG mechatronic unit cost in Singapore?

The 7-speed dry-clutch DQ200 used in VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT models has reconditioned and brand-new options. A reconditioned unit is $1,250 to $1,550 with a 6-month, 10,000km warranty, or $1,650 to $1,950 with an 18-month, 30,000km warranty. The brand-new bands are $3,830 to $4,130 and $4,210 to $4,510 respectively, on the same terms. DQ200 unit prices include installation. For the wet-clutch DQ250 and DQ500, a reconditioned unit is $2,250 to $2,550 including installation and basic programming. Cover for those units is confirmed on your written quote.

Why is my quote above the band on this page?

The bands reflect our usual quotes for each group. Your gearbox may differ from the common fitment, or the damage may be more extensive. CVTs and hybrids can sit higher, as can newer models. Driving on with a fault can also add to the work. We explain the difference on your written quote. You decide before work begins.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes, you can use Atome, Grab Paylater or Shopee Paylater. Tell our team you'd like to pay in instalments and we'll arrange it with you.

How long does an overhaul take?

We confirm the schedule after diagnosis, once we know which gearbox and parts the job involves.

Do you charge for towing?

Towing for gearbox repairs is free throughout Singapore. Send us the car's location if it won't move and we'll arrange collection.

Where are you?

You'll find us at 160 Sin Ming Drive, #03-15 Sin Ming AutoCity. Weekday hours are 9am to 6pm. On Saturdays we're open 9am to 4:30pm.
