Gearbox light on? Stuck in gear?

Tell us what the car is doing and what's showing on the dash. We'll tell you whether it points to the mechatronics unit, and what it takes to put right.

What a mechatronics unit actually does

On a modern automatic, the mechatronics unit is the brain of the gearbox. It is the electronics and the hydraulics in one housing.

It decides when to shift, controls the oil pressure that moves the clutches, and talks to the car's ECU the whole time. When it goes wrong, the gearbox can stop shifting properly even though the gears themselves are perfectly fine.

That is why a mechatronics fault gets misread so often. The car behaves like the whole box has failed, when the real problem is the unit running it.

We diagnose first, then quote

A warning light and limp mode could be a dead mechatronics unit. It could also be one tired solenoid, or a sensor that costs a fraction to put right. The bill is worlds apart.

So we scan the car and read the live data, not just the stored fault codes. We work out whether the fault is electronic or hydraulic, and confirm the mechatronic unit is genuinely the fault and not a cheaper sensor.

Then we quote. You get the price and the plain-English reason before any spanner comes out.

How we put a mechatronics fault right

There is a right order to this job, and we follow it every time.

  1. Diagnose. We scan the gearbox and watch the live data, not just the fault codes.
  2. Confirm the unit. We establish whether the trouble is electronic or hydraulic, and confirm the mechatronic unit is the fault.
  3. Replace. We fit the correct OEM-grade replacement unit. We don't gamble on patching a failed one.
  4. Code and adapt. The unit is coded to your car, adapted, and road-tested before the keys come back.

We confirm it's the unit before we replace it

Not every gearbox fault is the mechatronic unit. Sometimes it is a tired sensor or solenoid that costs a fraction. Sometimes it is a worn gearbox that needs an overhaul, not a new brain.

That is why we confirm exactly what is at fault before we quote. When it is the mechatronic unit, we replace it with the correct OEM-grade unit and code it to your car. When it is not, we tell you, so you never replace a unit you did not need.

And if the diagnosis points past the brain to a worn gearbox, we will say so. That is a different job. Read about a gearbox overhaul.

DSG, S-tronic, automatic: every brain is different

Different gearboxes run different mechatronics, and each fails in its own way.

Automatic (AT). Heat and old fluid wear the solenoids and valves the unit relies on.

Dual-clutch (DCT/DSG). The usual suspect on a Volkswagen Golf, Passat or Tiguan. Erratic shifts, shuddering and dash errors often trace straight to the mechatronics.

Audi S-tronic. The same family of faults across the A1, A3, A4 and Q range, electronics and hydraulics in one unit.

Whatever you drive, continental or Japanese and Korean, we know how its mechatronics behaves and how to put it right.

Can't drive it in? We'll fetch it

A mechatronics fault often leaves the car in limp mode, or stuck where it sits. Either way it is not going far under its own steam.

Mechatronics unit repair FAQ

What is a mechatronics unit?

It is the brain of an automatic gearbox: the electronics and hydraulics in one unit. It decides when to shift, controls the oil pressure that moves the clutches, and talks to the car's ECU.

What are the signs of a failing mechatronics unit?

A transmission warning light, limp mode, the car stuck in one gear, slow or missing Drive and Reverse, or shifts that have turned harsh and unpredictable.

Can a mechatronics unit be repaired, or does it need replacing?

We replace it. Patching a failed mechatronic unit is a gamble that rarely holds, so when the unit is the fault we fit the correct OEM-grade unit and code it to your car, backed by a long warranty. We always confirm it is genuinely the unit, and not a cheaper sensor or a worn gearbox, before we quote.

How much does mechatronics repair cost?

It depends on the make and the unit. We diagnose first, confirm it is the mechatronic unit at fault, and give you a firm quote before any work starts. Reconditioned and brand-new unit price bands are on our gearbox repair cost guide.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. Instalment plans are available via Atome, Grab Paylater and Shopee Paylater. Let us know when you come in and we'll sort it out.

How long does it take?

It depends on the make and on parts availability for your unit. Many are a swift turnaround once the replacement is to hand. We confirm a timeline once we have diagnosed your car.

Do you code and adapt the unit afterwards?

Yes. A mechatronics unit has to be coded to your car and adapted before it will work properly. We do that and road-test the car before you collect it.

Which cars do you handle?

Continental makes such as Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes, alongside Japanese and Korean cars.

Which gearboxes have a mechatronics unit?

Automatics, dual-clutch boxes (DCT/DSG) and Audi S-tronic. If you are not sure what your car has, send us the model and we'll tell you.

My car's in limp mode and can't move. Can you collect it?

Yes. We offer free towing for gearbox repairs anywhere in Singapore. Send us your location on WhatsApp.
